Day 1: Waterfall Rappelling, White Water Rafting & Visiting Indigenous People

I love an epic adventure. Something that takes me to a place that’s not easy to get to and getting there is part of what makes it epic. Welcome to day one of my bucket list adventures…

This bucket list adventure is one of the coolest experiences I have ever done. Everything about it is an adventure. We started with an early morning drive east through the lush mountain regions of Costa Rica towards the Caribbean. After a brief stop for lunch and a change into proper clothing we arrived at the banks of the Pacuare River, one of the top six white water rafting rivers in the world. We got suited up, briefed on safety and rafting technique, and off we went down class two and three rapids through a dense rain forest river gorge. After a half day of paddling we rounded a bend in the river and there in the shadows of the rain forest stood an amazing Eco-Lodge and our home for the next two nights.

Our adventures here included rappelling down waterfalls, zip lining through a dense Jurassic Park like forest and a two hour hike up out of the river gorge to the family compound of an authentic shaman living completely off the grid. The accommodations were nothing short of unbelievable and the food spectacular. The service is personal and attentive as our river guides also served us drinks and meals. It’s hard to believe that all this exists in a place where cell phones and internet do not exist, and all communication is made by shortwave radio.

While leaving a place like this was difficult, we knew what was coming the next morning and our departure was filled with excitement and anticipation. We had a full day of class 3 and 4 world-class rapids that began right in front of us. It was a day of nonstop adventure and excitement where the adrenaline levels were spiking and the sense of team accomplishment was euphoric.

This is the stuff adventures are made of.

Pura Vida!
